Tieta of Agreste

Tieta was driven out of the village by her father twenty-six years ago. Now she comes back: rich, sure of herself, afraid of nobody. The village takes her for a wealthy widow and treats her accordingly. Tieta pays to have electricity brought to the place. But nobody asks how she came by the money. Carlos Diegues directed the Brazilian film from Jorge Amado's novel. Sonia Braga takes the lead. The telling accuses the villagers of hypocrisy but does not put Tieta entirely in the right either; she is playing the same game. The same story had been made as a television serial in Brazil. The tone is bright, colourful and deliberately overdone.
