What Quilombo Is About
The Quilombo of Palmares was a community that really existed in seventeenth century Brazil, a place where people who had escaped slavery built an order of their own, and which over time opened to others who had been cast out. The film covers how that community was founded, the leadership of Ganga Zumba, and what Portuguese rule did to bring them back under subjection. Carlos Diegues builds the story in colour and music, almost as ceremony, and keeps drawing connections between the past he is telling and the Brazil of the years he was filming in. The ending is not an easy victory, but the name of the community has been carried down to now. Tony Tornado, Zeze Motta and Grande Otelo appear in the hundred and twenty minute Brazilian film, completed in 1984.
