What Beuys Is About

The documentary draws a portrait of Joseph Beuys, one of the most argued over figures in twentieth century German art. Andres Veiel builds the film by association rather than in the order of a life story: previously unpublished audio and video recordings, rarely seen photographs and interviews made today with people close to Beuys are woven together. Over three years of preparation more than sixty witnesses were interviewed and four hundred hours of film, three hundred hours of audio and more than twenty thousand photographs were gone through. The hundred and seven minute German production screened in the main competition of the 67th Berlin Film Festival and opened on 14 February 2017.
