What Black Box BRD Is About
The documentary returns to the West Germany of the seventies and eighties, the years when the struggle between the state and an armed organisation split society in two and the sides were beyond reconciliation. The film sets two life stories side by side: Wolfgang Grams, who took up arms, and Alfred Herrhausen, who rose to the highest rank in banking and was killed. Both passed through that period and the end of both was bound to violence. The account takes no side and brings testimony and family memory face to face; the elevating language the record uses about Grams belongs to the witnesses, not to the film. Andres Veiel’s hundred and two minute German documentary was completed in 2001.
