What Blessing Bell Is About
Out of work when the factory closes, Igarashi starts walking through the city and passes through a string of strange encounters over twenty four hours, barely saying a word, at one point even finding himself in prison. The film gives him no goal; we watch what happens from inside his silence and it looks at the mark he leaves on the lives of the people he meets. Susumu Terajima takes the lead in SABU’s eighty seven minute Japanese production, with Naomi Nishida and Ryoko Shinohara also in the cast. It screened in the Forum section of the Berlin Film Festival in 2003 and won the NETPAC award, and took the grand jury prize at the Cinemanila Film Festival the same year.
