Blue Star

S. Jayakumar's 2024 Tamil film is about two rival cricket teams in the same town. The captains are enemies, but a threat to their right to play forces them to act together. The real subject is not cricket but caste. Who can play on which ground in the town, which team comes from which neighbourhood, and how match results feed that division are all set out plainly. The sports-film template is used here to draw a social map. The film is set in Arakkonam at the end of the nineties and the period detail is careful. Ashok Selvan and Shanthanu Bhagyaraj play the two captains. The match sequences are well staged, though the final section gives in to the emotional peak the genre expects. Who it's for: those who like sports films and Tamil cinema that engages with caste. Who it's not for: anyone watching without context; the tension requires some prior knowledge of social divisions in Tamil Nadu.
