What Boys on the Run Is About
A socially awkward salesman at a company selling capsule toys tries to change what he is when a self assured rival moves in on the co worker he loves. The film does not offer that effort as a story of transformation; it tells how trying to appear other than he is rebounds on him. The account was adapted from a comic and builds its comedy out of shame. The woman is not drawn as a prize and stands as someone with decisions of her own. Offices, bars and small apartments are the film’s settings. What it arrives at is not a winning but a looking at oneself. Kazunobu Mineta and Mei Kurokawa appear in Daisuke Miura’s hundred and fourteen minute Japanese film, completed in 2010.
