What Bullets or Ballots Is About
Detective Johnny Blake punches his former superior Dan McLaren, newly made police commissioner, in front of everyone, and is thrown off the force. That is what makes him credible in the eyes of the racket boss Al Kruger; Blake is taken into the organisation and starts rising inside it. But Bugs Fenner, one of Kruger's men, has been certain from the first day that he is a policeman. Every move Blake makes has to convince the gang and Fenner at once. William Keighley directs, with Edward G. Robinson as Blake and Humphrey Bogart as Fenner; Joan Blondell is also in it. One of the crime pictures Warner Bros. turned out in the 1930s, with the man at the centre this time not the gangster but the policeman inside the gang.
