What The Bride Came C.O.D. Is About
William Keighley's 1941 American comedy follows a pilot in debt who agrees to abduct an oil magnate's daughter and deliver her to her father. She is about to marry a bandleader; when the plane breaks down in the desert the two are stranded in an abandoned town. It is the only comedy pairing James Cagney and Bette Davis, and both play outside their usual identities. The story follows a screwball template without always finding the tempo. The desert passages are the best part. A romance built on abduction is troubling now, and the film never questions it. Who it's for: viewers interested in classic Hollywood comedy and the Cagney and Davis pairing. Who it's not for: anyone uncomfortable with romance built on abduction, or wanting a sharp screwball rhythm.
