What The Green Pastures Is About
The film tells Old Testament stories, from the Creation to Noah’s ark and Babel, as imagined by a black congregation in the rural South; heaven is built like a Sunday service, and Rex Ingram plays God. With a cast made up entirely of black actors, it is one of very few such films of the studio era, and it has mattered for giving that cast the stage. But the language of the film and the way it portrays those people were criticised, in its own time and afterwards, for keeping stereotypes alive. The ninety three minute American film by William Keighley and Marc Connelly was adapted from a stage play.
