What George Washington Slept Here Is About
Bill and Connie Fuller have to give up their New York apartment. Without telling her husband, Connie buys a wreck of a farmhouse in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, on the strength of a story that George Washington spent a night there during the Revolutionary War. The house keeps falling down, the money keeps running out and Bill keeps waking up to a fresh disaster. It is adapted from the 1940 play by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, the last one the two of them wrote together. To build the ruin, the art department took the set from Arsenic and Old Lace and pulled out walls, banisters and plaster, and that demolition work earned an Academy Award nomination. Jack Benny, Ann Sheridan, Charles Coburn and Hattie McDaniel star, and William Keighley directed for Warner Bros.
