What Chronicle of a Homicide Is About
In Rome, in a clash with demonstrating workers whose cause the students have joined, a policeman and a student are both killed. The investigating magistrate, handling the case with two commissioners, wants to believe the version given by the police: that the student was killed by one of the workers and the policeman by Massimo Trotti. The film takes the investigation itself as its subject; how evidence is chosen and which account proves useful is the real matter. The account does not make a puzzle of who fired; it looks at what the institution wants to believe. It comes from the vein of Italian political cinema of the seventies. It does not end with justice being done. Massimo Ranieri and Martin Balsam appear in Mauro Bolognini’s ninety nine minute Italian film, completed in 1972.
