What The Inheritance Is About
Mauro Bolognini's film is set in Rome in the 1880s. An old man closes the family bakery, determined that nobody will take his fortune from him. The wife of one of his sons intends to turn the question of where that fortune goes to her own advantage, setting her brothers in law against one another and working to prevent her father in law from marrying again. The film builds the household struggle as a small model of the money order rising around it, with a calculation under everything anyone offers as affection. Bolognini tells it in heavy, ornate, cold images. Anthony Quinn plays the father, Dominique Sanda the daughter in law, with Fabio Testi and Gigi Proietti as the sons.
