What Metello Is About
Metello Salani is a young working class man who grew up practically an orphan because his father was repeatedly jailed for anarchist activity. In Italy at the end of the nineteenth century he is determined to improve his situation, and love, marriage and politics complicate it considerably. Mauro Bolognini adapted Vasco Pratolini’s novel and folds one man’s coming of age into the builders’ strike in Florence. Ottavia Piccolo won best actress at Cannes for the film. It does not preach class consciousness; it runs it through a single life.
