Cirkus Columbia

Herzegovina, 1991. Divko Buntić, who fled to Germany twenty years earlier, comes home once the communist order collapses. He arrives with a young fiancée, Azra, a black cat he treats as his luck, a Mercedes and money. His first move is to take back the house he abandoned, where his ex-wife and the son he never raised have been living for years. He sets up an arrangement in town that runs on cash, and for a while it works. But the war is not over; it is coming. Adapting Ivica Đikić's novel, Danis Tanović appears to be telling a family reckoning while actually filming a country's last ordinary summer. Nobody on screen sees what is approaching, and the audience does, which is where the tension underneath the film comes from. Scenes of a search for a missing cat sit in the same film as the edge of a war.
