What Close to Eden Is About
A herdsman lives on the Inner Mongolian steppe with his wife and their three children. Chinese policy allows no more, so he sets off for the nearest town to buy contraceptives. On the way he pulls a Russian truck driver out of a lake and brings him home, and the visitor, appalled at first, is soon reluctant to leave. Nikita Mikhalkov films the last stretch of nomadic life with a light touch and a heavy undertow, letting Genghis Khan haunt the same story as a television set. It won the Golden Lion at Venice in 1991.
