What A Slave of Love Is About
Russia in 1918, with the civil war closing in. A film crew that fled Moscow for a southern resort town is trying to finish a silent melodrama there: the leading lady Olga is difficult, the negative stock never arrives, and the town feels as though it could change hands any morning. Meanwhile the cameraman is pointing his camera at something other than the melodrama, and Olga drifts into the middle of it without meaning to. Nikita Mikhalkov's second feature takes its cue from the last days of the silent star Vera Kholodnaya. Yelena Solovey plays Olga as someone who mistakes the world for a set, and the film simply waits for the outside to walk in.
