Maria leaves her village to visit her daughter Nina in the city, and from the moment she arrives she moves everything out of place: she sets about repairing her daughter's broken marriage, interferes with her granddaughter, and picks fights with her son-in-law. The rules of city life mean nothing to her, and her rules do not fit the city. Nikita Mikhalkov puts three generations of women beside each other and uses the distance between them as a measure of how much the society itself has changed. Nonna Mordyukova's Maria is counted among the strongest female roles in Soviet cinema. It moves like a comedy and does not leave you feeling like one: nobody quite understands anybody, and all of them have to live in the same flat.
