What Without Witness Is About
A man arrives at his ex-wife’s flat and learns that she is about to marry a scientist named Valentin Shlyakhov. Years earlier he wrote a letter about Shlyakhov that badly damaged the man’s career, and now, afraid it will come out, he demands that the wedding be called off. What is left is one night, two actors and a two room apartment. Nikita Mikhalkov’s film never leaves that flat, and the history of this husband and wife, neither of whom is ever named, comes out as the conversation goes on. Irina Kupchenko and Mikhail Ulyanov play them. It was adapted from a play by S. Prokofyeva and shown at the Moscow Film Festival in 1983.
