Oblomov

St Petersburg, the middle of the nineteenth century. Oblomov is middle-aged, comfortably off, and spends most of the day in bed. He lives with his servant Zakhar, dreams of his childhood on the family estate, and finishes nothing. His boyhood friend Stoltz is the opposite: energetic, disciplined, forever working. Stoltz introduces him to Olga. Olga falls in love with Oblomov and sets about changing him. For a while he changes. Then he returns to his own nature, and it stops being clear who the man Olga loved actually was. Nikita Mikhalkov directs, adapting Goncharov's novel, with Oleg Tabakov as Oblomov and Yuri Bogatyryov as Stoltz. Two hours and twenty minutes. Mikhalkov does not retell the novel whole; he takes a few days out of it and draws the entire character from them.
