What Corsage Is About
The Empress of Austria turns forty and the court now regards her only as an image, expected to stay thin, to smile and to be quiet. Marie Kreutzer is not chasing historical accuracy and makes no secret of it, with modern songs and deliberately placed anachronisms. Vicky Krieps builds the rebellion out of small rudenesses rather than grand gestures. The corset is the subject directly: not being able to breathe. The palace rooms are shot cold and empty, without the usual period opulence. The ending departs from history on purpose.
