What Crocodile Is About
Three people live under a bridge on the Han River in Seoul: an old man, a boy, and a drifter the others call Crocodile. He hawks trinkets and steals by day, robs the bodies of people who jump from the bridge by night, and loses whatever he makes at a rigged card table. Then he pulls a young woman out of the water alive and takes her back under the bridge. This was Kim Ki-duk's first feature, a look at the people left underneath a country being sold to the world as an Asian Tiger. The relationship that follows is violent and coercive throughout, and Kim's treatment of his female characters was criticised for years afterwards.
