What Cry Wolf Is About
A young woman is told her husband is dead and goes to his family's estate. There is an inheritance at stake, and nobody knew she was married. The man who runs the house, her husband's uncle, looks at her with suspicion. She insists on staying. At night sounds come from one part of the house, and no one is allowed into that part. Peter Godfrey's film sits between gothic thriller and film noir. Barbara Stanwyck plays the woman and Errol Flynn the man of the house, one of the productions in which Flynn stepped away from his usual heroic parts. The telling uses the pattern of the woman who comes into the house: a structure repeated often in Hollywood after Rebecca. The suspense comes largely from the room nobody knows about.
