The Two Mrs. Carrolls

The Two Mrs. Carrolls, directed by Peter Godfrey, is a thriller starring Humphrey Bogart and Barbara Stanwyck, about a mentally unstable painter slowly poisoning his current wife so he can marry his new lover. The film was shelved for two years by Warner Bros., which wanted to avoid direct comparisons with Gaslight, and was not released until 1947. Bogart had married Lauren Bacall just eleven days before filming began, and the two commuted to the studio together throughout the shoot. The film includes a scene where Bogart jokingly riffs on his famous Casablanca line; it was commercially successful and contributed significantly to Bogart's 1947 earnings. Who it's for: anyone curious about a lesser known Humphrey Bogart thriller in which he plays a painter slowly poisoning his wife, released two years after it was shot. Who it's not for: those thinking this represents Bogart's best work, since period reviews described him as looking "uncomfortable" in this genre.
