What Dancing with Crime Is About
A taxi driver recently out of the army finds his closest friend dead in his own cab and goes after the people who put him there. The trail leads to a dance hall, behind whose friendly front a serious criminal operation is running. His fiancée takes a job there and starts gathering what she can from inside. John Paddy Carstairs’s film is set in postwar Britain and holds the black market, young men demobbed into unemployment, and the city’s nightlife in the same frame. Richard Attenborough plays the driver and Sheila Sim his fiancée; Dirk Bogarde appears in a small uncredited part. Brock Williams wrote the screenplay from a story by Peter Fraser. It was released on 25 June 1947.
