What Dangerous Beauty Is About
In sixteenth century Venice a woman too poor to marry the man she loves follows her mother into life as a courtesan, because that is the only position from which a woman can enter libraries and political conversation. The film sits on that paradox: what looks like freedom is also a dependency, and the protection lasts exactly as long as the city is comfortable. There is plenty of costume and banquet, but the tone hardens in the final act when Venice abruptly reclassifies her as an enemy. Based on a real poet, and more political than the genre usually allows.
