What Daughter of Shanghai Is About
Lan Ying, a Chinese American woman, falls into the hands of smugglers together with her father; her father is killed and she gets away. When she learns that the men use a nightclub as a front, she goes in as a dancer and tries to expose the ring from inside. Kim Lee, sent by the government, is after the same thing, and their paths cross. What sets the film apart is that two Asian American actors carry the leads in the Hollywood of the thirties without falling into stereotype; there was almost nothing like it in those years. Anna May Wong and Philip Ahn appear in Robert Florey’s sixty two minute film, completed in 1937.
