What Destined for Blues Is About
Ryszard Riedel fronted Dżem, the cult Polish rock-blues band. His voice and the way he was on stage passed into a generation; his life went on addiction. The film covers the rise, his relationship with his family, where his wife and children stood inside that life, and how the addiction ate everything. Jan Kidawa-Błoński directs, with Tomasz Kot as Riedel. The songs are Dżem's own. The familiar shape of the musician biography is here, but the film does not prettify anything, and it makes Riedel neither a saint nor a victim. Riedel died in 1994; the film was made eleven years later.
