Detective Conan: Private Eye in the Distant Sea

Conan and his friends win a prize: they will join a publicity voyage on a naval vessel. The ship is large and well equipped. During the voyage a body is found on deck. The victim is an officer serving on board. It is a closed environment; nobody can leave the ship and the killer is still inside. During the investigation another matter appears: there is a foreign intelligence agent on board trying to obtain information. Conan has to follow two files at once while the ship continues its exercise. Kobun Shizuno directs. Minami Takayama and Kappei Yamaguchi are among the voices. The source is Gosho Aoyama's comic series. It is the seventeenth feature in the series. Support was taken from the Japanese naval forces during production; the ship designs and interiors rest on real examples. That cooperation and the film's handling of military matters caused argument on release. The puzzle it builds is a closed room murder; the killer is certainly on board and the suspects are limited. The narrative joins two genres; the detective strand and the espionage strand come together in the last section. Its limit is plausibility; the action in the last section is above the average of the series and physically strained. Another limit is independence; the relations between the main characters come from the series. Who it is for: followers of the Conan series and viewers who like closed room mysteries. Who it is not for: it is not an entry point, the military ground is contested, and the finale overblown.
