What Dissolved and Effused Is About
The manufacturer Bierhanzl has vanished; when it turns out that he was dissolved in a bathtub and flushed into the sewers, Inspector Trachta takes on the case together with his inexperienced trainee Hlavacek. The suspects turn out to be users of the ointment the man produced: it was sold with the promise of growing hair and did precisely the opposite. As the questioning goes on the affair looks less like a murder case than like a chain of humiliations, and that is where the comedy comes from. Ladislav Smoljak’s eighty minute Czechoslovak film draws on motifs from the plays of the Jara Cimrman theatre, and members of that company appear in small parts. Jiri Zahajsky and Marek Brodsky take the leads; it was completed in 1985.
