An Uncertain Season

A small theatre company is preparing a new play. The company is amateur and its means are limited. They are moving into a new hall. The hall is on the edge of the city and in poor condition. No heating, a narrow stage, an uncertain audience. The rehearsals go on in those conditions. There is also the matter of official approval. Permission is needed before the play can be staged. A committee goes through the text. The company tries to save both the play and the permission. Behind the scenes there are small rivalries too. The film rests on the experience of a real company. The actors perform passages from their own stage work. The account moves with a bitter humour. Zdeněk Svěrák and Ladislav Smoljak appear in the eighty eight minute film, a Czechoslovak production Smoljak finished in 1988.
