What Jára Cimrman Lying, Sleeping Is About
Jára Cimrman never existed; a group of artists invented him in 1966 and gave him a complete life as inventor, sportsman, criminologist, poet, writer and philosopher, complete with a theatre in Prague devoted to keeping the idea running. The film by Ladislav Smoljak and Zdeněk Svěrák takes a guided visit to his room in the village of Liptákov as a frame and lines up reconstructed episodes from the life of this unjustly forgotten genius. The joke lies in keeping the invention up with a straight face: every detail is fitted into real Czech history. It came out in 1983 and was the first time the figure took concrete form on screen.
