What Don't Blame the Kid Is About
A Mexican romantic comedy. Renata is successful at work, orderly and lives to a plan. After one night she learns she is pregnant and cannot quite remember who the father is. She finds him. Julián is her opposite: untidy, irresponsible, with unclear work, living with his mother. The people around her tell her what to do; everyone has a different idea. Renata decides: she will live in the same house as this man until the birth, so the child's father knows the child. From there the film is about living together. Household order, family visits, hospital appointments, and two people trying to bear each other's habits. What the narrative is interested in is not love but class and habit: the distance between them is not emotional but a matter of daily life. The tone starts as comedy and changes as the birth comes closer; in the last section both characters turn unexpectedly serious. Karla Souza plays Renata and Ricardo Abarca plays Julián. Biassini Segura is in the cast. Gustavo Loza directed. It did well at the Mexican box office and reached a wide audience on streaming. Who it is for: anyone who likes romantic comedy and popular Latin American cinema. Who it is not for: anyone looking for surprise; the narrative follows the known path of the genre and its ending is clear from the start.
