What Double Door Is About
In Manhattan in 1910, Victoria Van Brett lives a closed off life with her sister Caroline in the gloomy Fifth Avenue mansion left by their industrialist father. When their half brother Rip brings a young bride home, Victoria’s domineering manner turns into outright cruelty, and the soundproofed secret room that gives the film its title is where she shuts her enemies away. Charles Vidor directed the seventy five minute Paramount production, adapted from Elizabeth A. McFadden’s 1933 Broadway play and released on 4 May 1934. Mary Morris and Anne Revere both repeat their stage roles, and for Morris, who had a long theatre career, this remained her only film work. Evelyn Venable and Kent Taylor complete the cast.
