What The Joker is Wild Is About
In Prohibition-era Chicago, Joe E. Lewis sings in clubs and does well out of it. Then he decides to move to a rival club, his old boss refuses to accept it, and men are sent to cut his throat. Lewis survives; the voice does not. A stage performer who cannot sing has only talking left, so he becomes a comedian, succeeds, and never puts down the drink or the anger at himself. Sinatra makes no attempt to make him likeable. All the Way won the Oscar.
