What Down the Ancient Stairs Is About
A mental hospital somewhere in Tuscany in the nineteen thirties. At the head of this closed world, which seems far from fascism, is Doctor Bonaccorsi, whose dream is to isolate the germ of madness. He also keeps up relations with the women in the hospital: the manager’s wife, a nurse devoted to him and a doctor’s wife. These relations are not formed on equal terms; he stands at the top of the institution and every one of the women is in a position dependent on him. His order is shaken by the arrival of Anna, a trainee psychiatrist who does not accept his theory about the origin of madness and who also resists his advances. Bonaccorsi is a far less secure man than he appears. Marcello Mastroianni plays the lead in Mauro Bolognini’s hundred and ten minute Italian film, completed in 1975.
