What Dr. Akagi Is About
1945, the last days of the war. In a small Japanese fishing town, Doctor Akagi gives nearly every patient the same diagnosis: hepatitis. The townspeople call him Kanzo Sensei, Doctor Liver. Chasing an epidemic, he has no supplies and nobody takes him seriously. Shōhei Imamura adapted the film from a book by Ango Sakaguchi. The war is in the background; in front of it are the daily life of the town, its strange people and the doctor's stubbornness. An escaped Dutch prisoner of war also enters the story. The telling keeps comedy and pain in the same scene and produces no medical heroism; Akagi is at once ridiculous, stubborn and right. Akira Emoto plays Akagi.
