What Dukhtar Is About
In the mountains of northern Pakistan, a blood feud between two tribes is to be settled by marrying a ten-year-old girl to a tribal chief. The night before the wedding her mother takes her and runs. Both the girl's father and the groom's men come after them, and with the help of a truck driver the escape turns into a chase along mountain roads. Afia Nathaniel's first feature treats child marriage not as a headline but as a series of decisions a mother has to make minute by minute. Samiya Mumtaz plays the mother and Mohib Mirza the driver. It screened at Toronto in 2014 and was sent forward as Pakistan's Oscar submission.
