What Eat That Question: Frank Zappa in His Own Words Is About
The documentary builds Frank Zappa's thirty-year career entirely out of archive footage. Television interviews, concert recordings, moments in the studio and senate hearings follow one after another. There is not a single newly shot frame; nobody talks about Zappa. All that is in the film is Zappa's own voice and his own sentences. Thorsten Schütte's documentary shows two Zappas: the composer enjoying himself on stage, and the hard, sharp-minded man who gave nothing away in an interview. The telling neither declares him a saint nor reins him in; it leaves him in his own words. His fight against censorship is the film's hardest passage. There is a great deal of music and the selection is wide.
