What Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me Is About
Elaine Stritch is eighty-seven and still on stage. The documentary follows her both on it and off: rehearsals, a hotel room, a hospital, a cabaret evening. Stritch forgets a line, gets angry, makes fun of herself and carries on. She does not hide from the camera how she copes with diabetes and with growing old. Tina Fey, Nathan Lane, Alec Baldwin and Hal Prince speak in Chiemi Karasawa's documentary. The telling does not turn Stritch into a lovable old lady; that she is difficult, that she wears out the people around her, and that she knows it herself, all stand there plainly. Her Broadway career, her history with drink and her attachment to the stage are set side by side.
