What Elvis Gratton, Le King des Kings Is About
Bob Gratton, a Quebecois Elvis impersonator, wins the contest and takes his wife on holiday to an island called Santa Banana. Pierre Falardeau and Julien Poulin created the character after the 1980 sovereignty referendum: Gratton is ignorant, in awe of American consumption, and dismissive of his own language and country. Every prejudice spoken in the film belongs to him, and the film does not defend him, it takes aim at him. It was assembled from three short films and became a cult object in Quebec, and the name Gratton eventually came to stand for a political type.
