Eno

Gary Hustwit's 2024 documentary is about the musician and artist Brian Eno. Counted among the founders of ambient music, Eno has made many albums and produced records for other artists; the film takes up his way of working. What distinguishes it is that it differs at every screening. Hustwit developed software with the digital artist Brendan Dawes; hundreds of hours of archive material are resequenced each time and a different edit results. The system is not artificial intelligence but a rule-based generative tool. The choice suits the subject; Eno has used methods leaving room for chance and systems in his own music. The result is a portrait with no single correct version. Who it's for: those who like experimental forms and music documentaries. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a chronological life story; the film never gives the same information twice.
