Handsome Poor Bilo

Bilo is the poorest man in the village and the one everyone mocks. Fifteen years earlier his father was killed on the landlord's orders, and the village keeps goading him not to let that blood go unanswered. Bilo's real trouble is elsewhere: he is in love with Cano, the daughter of the man he is supposed to kill. When that man dies before Bilo ever touches a trigger, Cano believes Bilo shot her father, and she becomes the one hunting him. It is among the bleakest of the films Ertem Eğilmez made under the Arzu Film banner. The blood feud is presented not as tradition but as an arrangement that suits the landlord; the man who stirs it up is the man who profits. İlyas Salman's Bilo carries the mark of humiliation even while getting laughs, and Şener Şen and Münir Özkul are far from their usual comic parts. It shows how late-seventies Yeşilçam hardened its village stories.
