Farewells

The story begins before the Second World War. Paweł is the son of a conservative, middle class family. He falls in love with Lidka, who works as a taxi dancer. Social convention stands in their way and neither of them can stand against it. Years pass, war breaks out, and Paweł is sent to Auschwitz. Lidka in the meantime marries his cousin. After the war the two meet again and it is clear what was between them has lasted. This time convention is no longer the issue. The ninety seven minutes are divided across the two sides of the war. Maria Wachowiak and Tadeusz Janczar appear in Wojciech Has’s Polish film, completed in 1958.
