What Memoirs of a Sinner Is About
Grave robbers dig up the body of a young man, who returns to life and starts recounting what led to his death: his attempt to prove that doing terrible things does not rule out the possibility of salvation, and his strange relationship with his own bloodthirsty double. Directed by Wojciech Has from a screenplay by Michał Komar, the film was adapted from James Hogg’s gothic novel of 1824, The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. Has keeps the strangeness of the book but is after unease, intrigue and beautiful images rather than Hogg’s satire on Calvinist predestination. It opened on 20 October 1986. Piotr Bajor plays the lead, with Maciej Kozłowski, Hanna Stankówna and Ewa Wiśniewska also in the cast.
