What The Doll Is About

Warsaw at the end of the nineteenth century. Wokulski is a merchant who knows how to make money; his ability is respected but, having no family name behind him, he is looked down on all the same. The aristocracy, secure on its pensions and unwilling to take a new business risk, drives him to distraction. He falls for the daughter of a noble family and tries to enter that world by secretly helping her indebted father. Wojciech Has turns Boleslaw Prus’ novel, counted among the greatest in Polish literature, into a dream with his gliding camera, telling the fall of one class and the loneliness of the one replacing it.
