What One Room Tenants Is About
In a single rented room in a Warsaw tenement, a group of young people, most of them students and would-be writers, live together. Because they have to share the room they see every aspect of one another: who eats what, who writes what, who falls ill, who cannot pay. In Poland in the 1930s, poverty and literary ambition sit side by side within the same four walls, and when one person leaves the room another arrives at once. Wojciech Has’s ninety two minute Polish film was adapted from Zbigniew Uniłowski’s autobiographical novel; Has wrote the screenplay and Stanisław Dygat prepared the dialogue. Gustaw Holoubek, Mieczysław Gajda and Beata Tyszkiewicz appear, and it was completed in 1960.
