An Uneventful Story

Nikolai Stepanovich is a professor of medicine. He is a known name in his field. He has come to the autumn of his life. He looks back over it. He weighs what he did and what he lived. What he arrives at does not comfort him. Boredom and a sense of emptiness weigh on him. He sees himself as of no use. He questions what his existence means. His ties to the people around him weaken as well. The story comes from a long tale by Anton Chekhov. It is set at the end of the nineteenth century. Its central figure stands for the Russian intellectual of that time. Chekhov described the piece as a question of having no settled view of the world. The film carries that bleakness as it is. Gustaw Holoubek, Hanna Mikuć and Janusz Gajos appear in the hundred and six minute film, a Polish production Wojciech Has finished in 1983.
