Young Balthazar is thrown from one remarkable event into the next. Making his way across a sixteenth century Germany broken by plague, he meets kabbalists, priests and himself. Balthazar, a student of alchemy, and his master have had to flee their home because of the inquisition. Adapted by Wojciech Has from a novel by Frédérick Tristan, it was the last film he made, and it reads as a parable about the metaphysical journey of a young man in search of knowledge and wisdom.
