Mel White
Dick Gephardt What For the Bible Tells Me So Is About
The documentary looks at how religious families in the United States met the fact of having a gay child. Five families talk: some rejected the child, some changed their minds years later, some never did. Among them are the family of Gene Robinson, later the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church, and the family of the politician Dick Gephardt. The argument the film makes is explicit: the religious right's reading of the Bible is not the only reading, and it has been used to stigmatise people. Daniel Karslake also gives room to theologians. The subject remains contested in the United States, and the documentary takes a side in that argument without pretending otherwise.
